FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

State Releases Graduation and Dropout Statistics

(FRISCO, CO – January 18, 2021) - Data was released last week from the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) concerning Graduation and Dropout Statistics. The released rates showed that Summit School District (SSD) has maintained a high level of graduation and completion, as well as a low dropout level, at better rates than the state of Colorado.

Graduation

Summit School District (SSD) has continued to achieve higher than the state graduation rates. SSD’s 4-year graduation rate resulted in 90.4% of scholars graduating in 2020, which includes a 4.7% decrease from the prior year’s graduation rate placing SSD 8.5% higher than Colorado’s graduation rate. The decrease is attributed to the effects and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting teaching and learning and important end-of-year intervention opportunities. High school staff, in collaboration with central office staff, are currently reviewing data and working to support scholars as we continue our work this academic school year.

“While our graduation rates remain well above the state and national averages, disaggregated data show there is still much work to be done to equitably serve all scholars and to ensure that each of our scholars earns a diploma and is prepared for the life, career and/or post-secondary opportunities of their choice,” commented Dr. Marion Smith Jr., Superintendent of Schools. “We are proud of the considerable work of all District staff throughout the pandemic to prioritize and center equity, which is the District’s second goal of the 2020-21 school year.”

Completion

Summit School District also achieved higher than state high school completion rates for the past 7 years, in which completion includes all graduates who receive a certificate, a designation of high school completion, or a High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED). SSD’s completion rate in 2020 was 92.6%, decreasing by 4.1% since 2019. This completion rate was 9.2% higher than the state.

Dropout

CDE also released statistics concerning dropout rates. In 2020, SSD continued to achieve a low dropout rate of 0.5%, consistent with 2019. SSD’s dropout rate was 1.3% percentage points lower than the state.

Overall in Colorado, the graduation rate continues to rise and the dropout rate falls as more students are staying in school and graduating in 4-years or completing their high school experience with a certificate.

Colorado graduated 81.9% of students in 2020, an increase of 0.8%, which marks the highest graduation rate in a decade. The completion rate was reported as 83.4% in Colorado, which includes a 0.5% increase from 2019. The dropout rate also improved with a 0.2% decrease in dropouts from the previous year, with an overall rate of 1.8% statewide, which is an all-time low.
